Blog Guelph: Church of Our Lady - Inside
Greetings from Guelph on this bright and breezy Wednesday.
Today's photo tour steps INSIDE one of Guelph's finest features, the lovely Church of Our Lady.
Several of today's pics are a result of the Guelph Flickr Photography Club's recent field trip - which coincidentally is meeting tonight. The club that is.
If you're keen to join the club or attend the meeting, give this link a tap.
And also because it's Wednesday, here's a reminder to tune into Royal City Rag - hosted by the talented Jan Hall on the CFRU.FM air waves - 93.3 at 6pm tonight. Featuring the Pantry Café Friday Night Sing-a-long Warm-up with Sam Turton, Jane Lewis, Heather MacRae, Monique Vischschraper, Jan Hall and anyone in the CFRU hallway. Of course car riders and home singers are welcome to join in.
Ah yes Wednesday.... the beloved apex of the week. A lotta church, a little singing and if you live here, a lovely last day of April to enjoy.
Best viewed with an eye for detail.

Blog Guelph: Catholic Hill
Ever since the school board tore down the old Bishop Mac high school to reveal the historic Loretta Convent on Catholic Hill, my entrepreneurial mind has been doing double time. The combination of buildings, location, open space and rich history seems like the perfect combo of raw ingredients for what could be a kick ass international tourist attraction.
As of Friday, this vision finally sprouted some serious roots.
Cultural tourism is a hot commodity in our world today and Guelph is about to step on the bandwagon thanks to a $5 million dollar stash of cash from the province. The coin is earmarked for the formidable task of transforming the Loretto Convent into our new civic museum. Guelph's royal crown is about to get a beautiful new gem.
With this news I'm pleased to start the week off with a 'Imagine Catholic Hill' series of photos shot by a talented slew of our very own cultural creatives.
Best viewed with a challis of medium bodied red wine and bread - say a fresh baguette from Ouderkirk & Taylor at 3 Wyndham Street.
Guelph - it's getting better all the time.

Blog Guelph: The Ladies Backside
With the Church of Our Lady as the center piece, the project has huge potential for success. I secretly think of this site as having equal draw as the Martyr's Shine of Midland - remember - even the Pope had to make a stop there.
People love beautiful, old churches.

Blog Guelph: Guelph's Most Beautiful Lady
Or leave a comment on this blog post by clicking on the ridiculously small link below that reads: Please Post Your Clever Comments Here.
It has been a big week in Blog Guelphville - what with the Guelph Flickr Pool Show opening at the Red Brick Cafe, Blog Guelph's first place position in the weekly Aussiejournos Blog Awards and the two dozen Hillside photos I was inspired to post on May 1 when Hillside Festival weekend passes went faster than stink.
So then - I'll round out the big week with a nine post series today featuring a little news, some bragging, more contest winners, a sign of bloggy influence and a request.
This photo of the most photogenic lady in Guelph was one of the winners in the Guelph Flickr Pool Photo Contest. Rather than focus on her lovely front, Stingray chose the rather striking backside of The Church of Our Lady.
Now the request. If you're digging Blog Guelph and would like to offer your two cents worth - literally, please indulge yourself in a subscription. As a self employed artist - Blog Guelph is one of my forms of work - and I'm attempting to make this effort pay me a modest wage.
Based on other forms of media, I'm thinking $2.00 a month would be fair. Of course this idea is voluntary and a bit of an experiment and you will still be able to stop by Blog Guelph without contributing. But if it is within your means - just click the Paypal button in the top left corner and follow the directions.
Have a terrific weekend.

Blog Guelph: Greater Guelph
Seems like everyone with a pom pom is trying out for the G-Town cheer leading squad these days.
The City has launched a quest for citizen feedback regarding the shape of our future and University of Guelph Prez been getting ink for sending his two cents worth of ideas to Mayor Karen Farbridge..
Now our daily news machine is getting on the Guelph's Great band wagon.
Yesterday I e-terviewed the charming Mr. Phil Andrews, Managing Editor of the Guelph Mercury about 'Greater Guelph' - an idea incubation scheme he and his staff are preparing to unfurl in Guelph over the next few months.
Here's that interview spread over today's series of six photos and posts.
And welcome 'new to Blog Guelph photographer' Funrevival with this contemplative composition of The Church of Our Lady and Mary.

Blog Guelph: Church of Our Lady - The Vision
According to the Guelph Public Library archives, John Galt, founder of Guelph, wrote the following statement in the deed transferring the land on which the Church of Our Lady would one day stand.
"On this hill would one day rise a church to rival St. Peter's in Rome."

Blog Guelph: Church of Our Lady - The Third
The Church of Our Lady was not the first church to be built on this site but rather the third.
A framed wooden church named St. Patrick's had been built on the hill by 1835 and was the first structure in Guelph that was painted on both its interior and exterior. It burned to the ground on October 10, 1844.

Blog Guelph: Church of Our Lady - The Evolution
Construction on St. Bartholomew's Church began shortly after St. Patrick's was destroyed. The new building was completed in 1846.
The following inscription appeared on the cornerstone of St. Bartholomew's Church.
"To God, the best and greatest. The faithful of Guelph, of the diocese of Toronto have built this new Church, in honour of the blessed Apostle Bartholomew, the first church having been consumed in flames"

Blog Guelph: Church of Our Lady From the Eramosa
More from the Guelph Library Archives: In 1877, construction of the Church of Our Lady began and it was not until the chancel, the transepts, and the chapels were built that the back of St. Bartholomew's was removed and the two structures were joined. As the side walls of the Church of Our Lady were built, the remnants of St. Bartholomew's were finally removed.

Blog Guelph: Church of Our Lady and Macdonell Street
And even more from the Guelph Public Library archives: Construction of the towers began in 1925 and was completed on November 13, 1926.
The complete building of the Church took more than 50 years, probably qualifying it as the longest construction project in the City's history!
Photographer Dezso applied some fancy effects to this classic shot of the Church of Our Lady.
You can see more of Dezso's work every Saturday morning at the Guelph Farmer's Market. His booth is located at the south end of the market which is open from 7am until noon.
