Blog Guelph: Monday is......Ironing Day
Welcome to the last Monday of November.
Yesterday I found this Guelph vintage "How to Iron a Man's Shirt" video clip on YouTube. It's a different, highly educational and perhaps a more quaint way to launch our week.
"Say ladies, it's ironing day at your house, but it can still be a good day."
~ Recorded around 1952, this 10-minute long 16mm film was produced by the Department of Public Relations of the Ontario Agricultural College in Guelph and the Information Branch of Ontario's Ministry of Agriculture and Food. ~
May your day be smooth and wrinkle free.
Press on......

Blog Guelph: November Syndrome
Besides being the 'moody swing month' between sunny October and Xmonth, November seems to suck the colour out of everything. Fog, sleet, wind, rain, snow, frost and thunder make the rounds - sometimes within a twenty-four hour period. Too early in the calendar year to fully hibernate - we are left to remember war and dead loved ones.
Ugh!
But then - just as I head to the fridge to drown my sorrows in sugar, the sun breaks out, temperature rises and a hint of August caresses my face.
Thankfully 30 days has November.

Blog Guelph: Flies in Your Face
Welcome to Wednesday.
Today's series of posts give way to some well photographed animals. Since much of Guelph's history is based in agriculture - what with G-town being the home to The Ontario Veterinary College and all - AND because OVC just happens to be the oldest veterinary college in Canada and the United States, it seemed fitting and fair to let the critters have their day in the blogospotlight.
OVC was originally located in Toronto in 1862, moved to Guelph in 1922 and became a founding college of the University of Guelph in 1964. To review Key Dates in the History of the Ontario Veterinary College, click on the link.

Blog Guelph: Cow Love
Greeting Guelphites and Blog Guelph lovers - seems love is in the air and and the heifers at the University of Moo are puckering up. Please kiss a cow today.
Today's foto fivesome are grouped together randomly - in a slice of life kinda way. I've sprinkled some news throughout the posts too - along with a You Tube video - cause I'm in a sprinkling kinda mood.
Must be the pending full moon - and the light yet glorious overnight rain.
Happy day. And for friends and family of Canadian artist Ken Danby, a sad day indeed.

Blog Guelph: University of Guelph Cannon
In today's series of 5 images, I'm pleased to offer some mildly odd and strange sights from our fair city.
The University of Guelph cannon is typically used for creative expression, advertising and just plain fun. But in all my year's of 'cannon watching' today's effort trumps them all.

Blog Guelph: Interview With CFRU's Jan Hall
CFRU.Fm 93.3's ubiquitous radio host, the wonderful Jan Hall is the voice and brains behind Royal City Rag - the two hour Tuesday morning local news dish that starts at 7 AM.
Here's an E-terview I cooked up and spread lightly over 6 posts.
So then Jan Hall - do tell the blogosphere how you got your start in the wild world of Campus Community Radio?
Jan Hall: Radio is like a drug for me. My first taste was at WEFT90.1FM, a cool community radio station in Champaign-Urbana Illinois while doing specialty veterinary training. I had a Morning Menu show (music and information) then called "Letter from America" from 6-9 a.m. I got to play the Proclaimers every week! Had to give the show up for the sake of my career.

You certainly got me to get my ass down to the River Run that night. Your team was terrific.

Blog Guelph: Have a Real Cow
Today I'm pleased to feature a six post series of odd shots.
Yesterday I inadvertently misidentified a kissing horse as a kissing cow. As both a farm girl and a University of Guelph Alumni (sure I was an Artsy but still) I'm hoping that this photo, also by Sandra Regina, will set the record straight. I do know the difference.
This is a cow – a glaring, evil looking cow.

Blog Guelph: Roof-ed Car
Guelph student Timylee caught sight of this 'prank' at the University of Guelph's MacKinnon building yesterday.
Timylee writes, "ERTW'07, I wonder what it stands for"?
"Either to raise awareness for Equal Rights Towards Women, or most likely, a prank by the engineers, in which case, it would stand for Engineers Rule The World. "

Blog Guelph: Top of The Ring
Way back when hair was big and the University of Guelph's Bullring hosted The All Nighter, Mr. David Akin was one of the Rings stellar DJ's and if I recall correctly - a dancing machine himself.
Now the man is a Gemini award-winner and a Parliamentary Correspondent in the Ottawa Bureau of CTV National News!
Obviously Mr. Akin has still got 'the moves'.
Plus he's a blogger - and he said some swell stuff about Blog Guelph right here.

The pond and fountain at the Ontario Agriculture College Garden at the University of Guelph is determined to make way for spring. But as the water busts through winter's icy shield, let us not forget a key virtue of winter - no mosquitoes.

Blog Guelph: Pinwheel
At first glance the plethora of pinwheels surrounding the University of Guelph's famous cannon look like spring flowers.
According to photographer Timylee, "each pinwheel is a statistical representation of undergraduate students who could potentially be affected directly or indirectly by sexual assault."
Does the coming of spring bring out more potential for sexual assault or is the timing of this undertaking coincidental to the season?

Blog Guelph: Vieux Farka Toure
Claygrl caught Vieux Farka Toure in action at yesterday's noon hour concert at the University of Guelph.
According to his press release, "10% of proceeds from Vieux Farka Toure will be donated to Bee Sago, a UNICEF-affiliated organization, as part of Modiba's "Fight Malaria" campaign. With Vieux's help, they hope to reach their goal of providing every pregnant woman and child in the Touré's home region of Niafunké with a treated mosquito net—the most effective preventative measure in the fight against malaria, Africa's leading cause of infant mortality. "

Blog Guelph: Noon Hour Concert
It's been a while since I attended a U of Goo Noon Concert at me old Alma Mater. And what a treat this was - both musically and socially. The audience was thick with our arts community leaders and players.
Zaki Ibrahim - a stunning singer started the show followed by Mali born Vieux Farka Toure and his band. At one point University Prez Alastair Summerlee (and blogger) walked through the courtyard, with his freshly purchased Centre Six lunch - beaming as he scanned the muliticultural audience of students, staff, alumni and regular Guelphites.

Blog Guelph: Drift Power
This hot musical tip just in from my University of Guelph correspondent Tannis Slimmon.
"If you're up for some very special African music on this Thursday just before noon, there's a FREE concert happening in the courtyard of the University Centre at the University of Guelph."
Zaki Ibrahim will be playing at 11:45 am. Check herMySpace link for details.
Following Zaki, Vieux Farka Toure, son of legendary Ali Farka Toure, will be performing. Check his link right here.
Vieux was recorded at the Institut National des Arts in Bamako, Mali by Guelph's own Lewis Melville a couple of years ago.
