Blog Guelph: The Monday Edition

Hoody, originally uploaded by Shacklady.

So it's the second week of x-month, 11 days until winter officially starts, Human Rights Day and a grey Monday - all boiled together.

Here's my thought of the day.

I'm wincing at the juxtaposition of the daily warnings of our sickening climate and the crush of mindless, unneeded consumerism that this season stimulates and endorses. We boost the economy while we stick it to our ecology.

Ho, Ho, Ho. Go Shopper Go!

Today is people photo day on Blog Guelph. We are all on the planet together my friends. We have no hope for a better past. But today holds promise for everyone. Our future depends on now. We can't wait for politicians. We CAN lead ourselves.

Blog Guelph: Church of Our Lady - The Third

3, originally uploaded by Shacklady.

The Church of Our Lady was not the first church to be built on this site but rather the third.

A framed wooden church named St. Patrick's had been built on the hill by 1835 and was the first structure in Guelph that was painted on both its interior and exterior. It burned to the ground on October 10, 1844.

Blog Guelph: Church of Our Lady - The Evolution

2, originally uploaded by Shacklady.

Construction on St. Bartholomew's Church began shortly after St. Patrick's was destroyed. The new building was completed in 1846.

The following inscription appeared on the cornerstone of St. Bartholomew's Church.

"To God, the best and greatest. The faithful of Guelph, of the diocese of Toronto have built this new Church, in honour of the blessed Apostle Bartholomew, the first church having been consumed in flames"

Blog Guelph: Church of Our Lady From the Eramosa

Our Lady, originally uploaded by Shacklady.

More from the Guelph Library Archives: In 1877, construction of the Church of Our Lady began and it was not until the chancel, the transepts, and the chapels were built that the back of St. Bartholomew's was removed and the two structures were joined. As the side walls of the Church of Our Lady were built, the remnants of St. Bartholomew's were finally removed.
