Blog Guelph: 6 String Nation Guitar in Guelph
Mr. Andrew McPherson sent me this 'must do' musical heads up.
"A quick general email blast about our good friend and CBC maverick, Jowi Taylor's visit to the city o' music this Thursday, April 5th. With the tireless efforts of our own Doug Larson, the two musical minds have put together an amazing day of workshops, 'how to's' and a wicked night of toons, all revolving around the amazing 6 String Nation Guitar. Hope you can make it out to all or part of the day's activities. "
"The show at Manhattan's (7 to 11'ish) features an amazing sampling of the area's rich artistic talents, all strumming a ditty on the aforementioned wunder-axe. It's free (although digging into your pocket for a donation to the project will not be met with resistance) and is likely to sell out, based on the jaw dropping list of performers, so make a reservation or get your butt down there for 7 sharp."
Where: Manhattan's - 951 Gordon Street, Guelph 519-767-2440
When: Thurs. April 5, 7-11?
Cost: Freeeeeee
Who: among others, Jeff Bird, Kate Schutt, Scott Merritt, Ambre McLean, Kevin Breit, Lewis Melville, Tannis Slimmon, Jude Vadale, Craig Norris, yours truly.......
Thanks Andrew!!

Blog Guelph: Lewis Melville and "Afganistan....On Guard For Thee?"
Today's three post series is dedicated to Lewis Melville and the project "Afganistan....On Guard For Thee?"
Lewis has contributed a kings ransom to the cultural capital of Guelph over the 20 plus year's I've known him. Quite simply, he is a creative genius.
Lewis runs a very busy recording studio in Guelph, performs with countless musicians - including his life partner Tannis Slimmon and thinks up inspired projects like "Afganistan....On Guard For Thee?" - a creative, interactive, multi-disciplinary exploration of Canada's involvement in the Afghanistan War. Keep reading today's series for more details.
This painting of Lew was done on June 26, 2000 by Guelph artist Greg Denton as part of h is Anyone Lived project. Click the pic to see 400 other Guelphites who participated.

Blog Guelph: Edmonton - The Song
For a taste of this Saturday's “Afghanistan… On Guard For Thee?” Tranzac gig, here's one of the powerful tunes (co-written by Lewis Melville and Tannis Slimmon) that you'll hear. "Edmonton" was video taped at a recent Lah Lah Lounge performance (located at Guelph's Manhattens Pizza) by Tannis and Lewis.
Should you love the tune and miss the gig, Edmonton is part of the projects triple CD collection of original music featuring 51 great songs involving hundreds of musicians - many of them Guelphites. Songs were written specifically for the “Afghanistan…On Guard For Thee?” project to help promote open discussion in Canada about our role in the Afghanistan war.
Go here and get yours.
And while we're at it, let's thank Lewis for sharing his creative gifts with all of us.

Blog Guelph: MySpace Guelph Style
But that doesn't stop me from posting some Guelph Musician My Space links so that you can listen to some great home town tunes.
Why not while away some time this afternoon with the "Global Ethno Dub Electronic" smoothness of Eccodek - or the "Folk Rock Indie" groove of Sue Smith. Newish to Guelph, we have Kate Schutt offering her alternative jazzy tones. Then there's Mr. Stephen Fearing - singer songwriter extraordinaire or with his Rockin' gang - Blackie and the Rodeo Kings.
This is the very tip of and enormous amount of Guelph talent. Should I continue to be shut off from the world of photo blogging tomorrow, I will continue mining MySpace.

Blog Guelph: Musical Guelph Gift Guide

Guelph, Ontario could easily be considered Nashville North thanks to the plethora of fine musicians that call this town home. If you're looking for a Guelph flavoured melodic gift for someone this season, here are three suggestions.
- Check out the new music store on Quebec Street at the junction of Baker Street in downtown Guelph and ask the owner to show you the Guelph selections.
- Give the gift of music lessons. Folkway Music offers a variety of classes.
- Support this project. One of Guelph's most prolific talents has just released a 3 disc compilation titled Afghanistan...On Guard For Thee? Fifty-one Canadian artists provide their musical statements on Canada's place in the current military action in Afghanistan.
"When I hear all the songs together I get a very powerful sense that everyone cares a lot about this issue, and that I'm listening to a continuous story being told by many different voices, each from a different perspective."
Go here to find out more about the entire project.
Go here to see the list of musicians and to buy and download the discs.
If you'd like a copy the CD set, it is currently available from the man himself - Lewis Melville (lmelvill@uoguelph.ca) or Dave Clark (woodchoppers@sympatico.ca) in Toronto.

The tunes were terrific - with all the grooviness of a mini, chilly Hillside Festival. Left to right: Katherine Wheatley, Tannis Slimmon, Nick Craine, Jude Vadala.
