Blo Guelph: The Monday Fog

november, originally uploaded by downtownlynn.

It's Monday yet again.

As a public service I'd like to offer several choices for approaching the often loathed beginning of the week. Of course this is a thinly veiled attempt to keep myself and Downtown Lynn afloat through the remaining soul sucking twelve days of November - but so be it. We are a self-help blog selfishly focused on ourselves.

The images for today include shots of yesterday's charming Guelph Santa Clause Parade, Hillside Festival 2007, Dance Hall Free For All, the infamous Dino from Dino's Athletic Direct and Brewster the smiling dog.

May your day be clear of fog.

Blog Guelph: Sharon Smith

Photo Credit: Ian Thomas ~ For more images by this photographer, please click the pic and visit their Flickr account.
Photo taken in Guelph, Ontario Canada.

For the last nine years, my book keeper, Sharon Smith, regularly came to my home office to do my books. Always punctual, I would have her coffee ready to pour, paper work organized and my prehistoric iMac cranked on in anticipation.

Like a tradition, we would start the monthly visit pretty much the same way every time. Sharon would settle in the office chair and gently pat the computers dusty head - I would offer up specific accounting needs that I had identified and we'd both comment on the state of the universe. Then I would leave her to the task of coaxing data into the belly of the beast of 'artificial intelligence'.

When Sharon didn't appear last Thursday morning, I immediately started to worry. It was 9:15 and in the entire time we'd worked together I had never known her to be late.

I called her home and left a message.

When her sister called back a short time later to tell me the sad news of Sharon's sudden death earlier in the week, I was stunned to say the least. Now I'm deeply saddened.

Today's series of several images is dedicated to my friend and wonderful book keeper Sharon Smith. She saw me through some magnificent highs and excruciating lows over our years together - always steady as eddy. Indeed, she helped managed many of Guelph's artists and community group finances and guided even more befuddled people through 'tax madness' each year. Sharon loved dancing, singing and being outdoors by the shore of any body of water.

She is and will continue to be greatly missed. Gilchrist Funeral Home Visitation and Memorial service details are here.

Blog Guelph: T'was A Dark and Foggy Night

Guelph's Covered Bridge on a foggy Night by FunRevival. Click the pic.

I've been saving up night time shots from around the city - which I'm happy to present to you today.

I couldn't help but notice that barely a creature is stirring in any of the six images in today's series. I assure you that we are not under a curfew in Guelph, and from experience I know that Guelph does have a rather robust nightlife. Perhaps everyone is getting their beauty sleep.

This is our beautiful timberframe, covered bridge. It spans the Speed River at the confluence of the Eramosa River.

Blog Guelph: Steeple Peeper

Over the last year, I've posted over 900 photos on Blog Guelph. Because of this extraordinary experience, I see Guelph very differently than I have before. Edeva's example of St. George's Church steeple tucked behind the Heffernan Foot Bridge illustrates my new perspective perfectly.

The details of our city are wondrous to behold.

Blog Guelph: Cat's Eye

cat's eye, originally uploaded by vw-busman.

Gow's Bridge was built l897 and named after Peter Gow, a prominent local politician and mill owner. According to various accounts, Mr. Gow operated a tannery and produced shoes.

Peter Gow also led a very politically active life in Guelph. Besides serving on the school board and the town council, he became Reeve in 1857 and served as Mayor in 1866 and 1867.

Is it any wonder the man got a bridge named after him?

Blog Guelph: Covered Bridge Face

DSC_0110.JPG, originally uploaded by edeva_art.

Guelph's Lattice Covered Footbridge was built in June 1992 near the junction of the Speed and Eramosa Rivers by 400 timberframers who were gathered in Guelph from all across North America.

Let me repeat that. Four hundred people came to Guelph to volunteer their time and build us a bridge because it's what they like to do.

Based on an original design from the 1800s, it is one of only two in all of Ontario.

The five-day gathering of members from the International Timber Framers Guild resulted in the building of a 120' pedestrian lattice-covered bridge over the Speed River. You can still purchase the video of that incredible event right here.

I remember standing up to my waist in the river, all dewy eyed as the bridge was slowly swung into position. I was not alone. Hundreds of amazed Guelphites were watching on the shores, out in their boats, or like me standing right in the middle of the river .

After the bridge was secured in place, a large celebration took place in the adjacent park. The BBQ portion was well attended by the community but strangely the dance was not. Imagine my delight when my three girlfriends and I realized that we had almost 400 fit and handsome dance partners to choose f rom.

Blog Guelph: Heffernan Street Foot Bridge

* 773, originally uploaded by dezsö.

The lovely downtown Heffernan Street Footbridge was built in 1914. Accessible at the pedestrian crossing in front of St. George's Church, the open spandrel arch bridge deposits users across the Speed River at Heffernan and Arthur Street.

Blog Guelph: Foggy Bridge

Foggy Bridge, originally uploaded by TheGiantVermin.

In 1991, the bridge got a serious facelift. According to info I found on the
consulting teams website (Gamsby and Mannerow Limited), "the original structure was deteriorated beyond remedial rehabilitation and therefore the superstructure was rebuilt to original dimensions. One section was precast at the site to span existing railroad tracks."

Total Project Cost: $850,000 in 1991 dollars.

Blog Guelph: Bridging the Gap

Autumns begin, originally uploaded by maliceorchid.

I don't recall hearing any outrage over spending $850,000.00 'hard earned taxpayers dollars' on something as frivolous as a walking bridge". But I suspect that perspective would exist. There have and will always be spendthrifts among us.

Blog Guelph: Bridge Over Foggy Water

Bridge over foggy water, originally uploaded by TheGiantVermin.

If we step back in time to 1991 and imagine a different attitude - one where our tax dollars were earmarked for anything BUT heritage, this bridge would likely not be standing. And these photos, taken between October 6 and 10th, would not have been possible.

History is not over. We make it every day.

Blog Guelph: Stone Road Bridge

stone road bridge, originally uploaded by cool-baby.

If you head out of town on Stone Road towards the east, you'll come across this lovely bridge. Thankfully when the 'new and wide' bridge was put in last year, this beauty was spared the wreaking ball. Trails lead off on both sides of the river at this point. The bridge is also a common pull out/ put in point for canoeheads.

Cool-baby gives us this sweet perspective.
