Blog Guelph: Doors Open Guelph

Old Guelph post office lomo, originally uploaded by Dave Noyle.

Get to know Guelph better by getting inside Guelph this weekend.

On Saturday, April 26, Guelph residents and visitors are invited to step inside some of Guelph's finest heritage buildings, many of which are not normally open to the public. Included in this year's locations is the former Post Office on Wyndham Street.

Doors Open Guelph 2008 is a free event.

Blog Guelph: Catholic Hill

Our Lady Lomo, originally uploaded by Dave Noyle.

Ever since the school board tore down the old Bishop Mac high school to reveal the historic Loretta Convent on Catholic Hill, my entrepreneurial mind has been doing double time. The combination of buildings, location, open space and rich history seems like the perfect combo of raw ingredients for what could be a kick ass international tourist attraction.

As of Friday, this vision finally sprouted some serious roots.

Cultural tourism is a hot commodity in our world today and Guelph is about to step on the bandwagon thanks to a $5 million dollar stash of cash from the province. The coin is earmarked for the formidable task of transforming the Loretto Convent into our new civic museum. Guelph's royal crown is about to get a beautiful new gem.

With this news I'm pleased to start the week off with a 'Imagine Catholic Hill' series of photos shot by a talented slew of our very own cultural creatives.

Best viewed with a challis of medium bodied red wine and bread - say a fresh baguette from Ouderkirk & Taylor at 3 Wyndham Street.

Guelph - it's getting better all the time.

Blog Guelph: Chain Link Hoar

Chain Link, originally uploaded by Dave Noyle.

It's my turn to wish you a Happy New Year, the upcoming Year of the Rat.

Ah, the freshness of new beginnings, the endless possibilities, the crisp snap of the frigid air...er, scratch that.
More like the balmy breezes of January.
What is this anyway, a chinook? Or perhaps just our planet revolting...

So, in the spirit of " remember when it was winter?", I present a handful of photos inspired by the stunning hoarfrost of boxing day.
Besides, call me a giddy, silly child, but it is super fun to say hoar and not offend.

Anon,
Downtown Lynn

The spring wildflower above is the Trillium - Ontario's Official Provincial Fleur.

The Trillium spotting window of opportunity is short yet well worth the effort if you like the sensation of 'breathtaking'. A forest full of these beauties is really something to behold.

Patchwork-1, originally uploaded by Dave Noyle.

I recently enjoyed an excellent breakfast special in the time warped Apollo Restaurant on Wyndham Street in downtown Guelph. New to Blog Guelph photographer Dave Noyle gives us this patchwork view of the restaurant that has stayed the same since velvet wall paper was hip.
