Blog Guelph: Known to many as the home away from home

Home.

Home is where the heart is.
Home Sweet Home.
Homeward bound.
Sweet home Alabama.

So many notions of what home means to each of us.
Have a look-see at the various homes discovered in Guelph and environs - or at least what some call home.

Blog Guelph: Albion At Night

Albion At Night, originally uploaded by RavenGirlPhotography.

The Albion's snazzy new sign and awning finally made it through the red tape of rules. Although the Alb is a tad away from the Art Action, the patio is well worth a visit for a refresh.

I'm told the Chicken Caesar is to die for.

Blog Guelph: The Albion Rocks

canada tour small 17-3-07-7141, originally uploaded by edhombre.

When I asked Ed Hombre if I could blog one of his terrific Albion gig shots from the weekend he quickly replied, "Of course you can! "

Be sure to check out the band (www.fourdayhombre.co.uk) and click the pic to see the full photo stream of the gig.

Ed also wanted to thank the Alb and Bubba. "We had a great time when we were there..."

No surprise to me.

Upstairs at the Albion has always been a terrific place to see a band.

Continuing with the list of Guelph players - but of course never completing it because music keeps being made in our beautiful city - please check out: Kate Schutt (pictured); Lewis Melville, The Kramdens and Katherine Wheatley.

Blog Guelph: Dance

Albion dancing, originally uploaded by K Jane.

This from DJ eccodek.

A snowy greeting to you all,

Feels like we'll need some thermo-nuclear sweat to let old man winter know we're not ready yet. Hope to see you all at the beautifully renovated Diana's Downtown this Saturday night for the launch of Guelph's newest night of groove and exotica, SHIVAboom with your selecta DJ eccodek.

I'll be spinning from approximately 9.30 'til 1'ish. It's free and it is all about dancing, mos def. But feel free to chill and soak up the sounds of Africa, India, Egypt, the Orient, Brazil and beyond in a global fusion feast.

Diana's Downtown: 141 Wyndham St, (836.3460)

guidance and peace,
andrew

Blog Guelph: Inside Blog Guelph

Back in early August, a small group of photo nuts meet at the Albion for a face to face, beer drinking, photo swapping good old time also known as Guelph's First Flickr Meet.

Blogger/photographer VW_Busman cooked up the idea and told Flickr.....the photo hosting site that Blog Guelph relies on. Upon VW's arrival, he laid some nifty Flickr swag stickers and buttons out for the gang. Here we see Blairware’s photo of a Flickr button resting on the head of a beer.

How friggin fun is that?!

If you're keen to contribute to Blog Guelph but have yet to figure out the complex system for having your photos appear, allow me to reveal the process.

Start by setting up an account with Flickr. Upload your digital photos. Tag the Guelph shots 'Guelph'. Then, go to Groups and join the one called 'Guelph'. You can read the various strings, throw your two cents worth into the conversation or just lurk around. After you upload your pictures and tag them, send them to the Guelph group. If the 'blog this' toggle doesn't appear over your images, we'll sort that out directly.

That's the full deal. Me or someone filling in for me will cruise the shots and post one or more a day with a wee commentary. Then we'll link back to you and leave a comment on your site.

Simple like sunshine don't you think?

Of course it would also be spectacular if you told everyone you knew about Blog Guelph. Even more stupendous would be getting a link from your website or blog to us. And triple fun arrives if you are a Guelphite and have a blog.....cause we'll add you to the blogroll on the right hand side.

Our purpose is fairly straightforward. My dear friend Henry Kock used to say if you want to see positive stuff go on in your community, you've got to make the process beautiful. Following this logic along, me thinks the more people engaged in 'making it beautiful' the more beautiful we'll be.

Blog Guelph wants to capture this cities beauty and encourage more of it. Guelph is our home after all.

We're also looking for sponsors and advertisers for the site. Even though this is an arty farty Art Jam project, it does take time and we do like to eat. Contact details are on the right hand side bar.

Blog Guelph: Food

The Albion Hotel serves a fine selection of simple food faves that go great with a pint of beer. You can dine in on one of two patios or stay inside the premise enjoying the basic old hotel decor in any one of four rooms.

I've recently been told that the Alb makes the best burgers in town. I'm waiting for photo-food-ographer Greggie Cliffie to confirm this rumour before I venture forth.

Click the pic to see what else GC is eating this year.

Blog Guelph: Reasonable Art

Last night I joined my pal Jeff for a thrilling night of NHL Hockey playoffs, viewed on the BIG screen at the famous Albion Hotel.

Over the last few years playoff watching has become an annual treat that we share. Neither of us follows the sport until the minute that we settle into our annual bar of choice. Then we're hollering along with the diehards.

When Edmonton sunk the overtime goal in the do or die game, we threw our arms in the air and joined the roar of Albion patrons marking the red-letter Canadian moment.

On the right hand side of this blog you will see a link to Reasonable Art and the artist behind this fabulous image.

Blog Guelph: Albion Hotel

Albion Hotel
Originally uploaded by ericjgiberson.
The Albion Hotel is commonly known as the 'centre of the universe'. Well past 100 years young, this fine drinking establishment offers one of the earliest-to-open out door patios plus a second floor dance/live music venue that rocks socks.

In earlier times, noteworthy acts like Blue Rodeo and Ani Difranco filled the joint. Local bands routinely cut their teeth. Excellent DJ's spin funky tunes and many a fine birthday celebrations are had.

Directly across the street from the Church of Our Lady, the Alb is a destination unto its self.

Praise be.

Thanks to Flickr and Ericjgiberson for the pic.
