Blog Guelph: 10/31
The thrift stores are a flurry of activity today as Guelphites clammer to pull off their creepy costumes for the first big, pre daylight savings time 10-31 in my memory. Yes folks, our clocks have yet to fall back meaning it will be light longer than ever tonight.
So here's the question of the day? Will parents buckle to the incessant pleas of their ghostly brood and hit the streets before sunset or try to restrain the eager alter egos until dark of night?
So you know, I've got my money is on the buckle factor.
AND - thanks to the 'it's happening faster than we ever imagined global warming' we will also enjoy unseasonably warm temperatures.
How scary is that. Boo Hoo.
So then, and on a more cheerful, helpful Blog Guelph note, if you happen to be one of the poor misfits that didn't scoop a mullet wig at VAVA Village or mistakenly dumped the Hallowe'en costume bag during spring cleaning, today's series of photographic brilliance will provide you with some easy solutions to your tricky day.

'Tis a spooky time of year. Tonight is Devil's Night, tomorrow Halloween and the streets of downtown Guelph will no doubt be swarmed by costumed crazies.

There are a plethora of good times to be had.
Just take a look at the following 5 pics to see some of what the core has in store for you.

Blog Guelph: Love Love Love
The Dalai Lama is in Canada this week - apparently meeting with our man Steve and the boys sometime today. It was a nice relief to hear this news broadcast between the regular grim reports of death, destruction and despair that the media feed our bleeding ears.
I especially found pleasure in one short clip that CBC Radio One ran of the chirping voice of the Dalai Lama reporting that he is now an honourary citizen of Canada - followed by the most delightfully love filled giggle that you could ever hope to hear from a person.
The man is full to the brim with love.
And so too is Blog Guelph on this fine last Monday of October.
Love

Blog Guelph: Word Crazy
No, we haven't gone completely bonkers today, but we do confess to loving words as well as pictures. Pictures and words, that's Blog Guelph in a nutshell.
Our incredibly talented photographer, Peter Kelly, has nicely captured an historically crazy word.
Asylum - late Middle English via Latin from Greek 'asulon' - refuge, from 'asulos' - inviolable.
Each and every day I receive an email shedding light on the origin and usage of a single word.
Whether or not this improves my word power is debatable but it is fascinating in an oh so nerdly way.
Take a look for yourself, A.Word.A.Day.
and while you're at it, click on these Guelph specific pics....just see where they can take you.

Blog Guelph: Flies in Your Face
Welcome to Wednesday.
Today's series of posts give way to some well photographed animals. Since much of Guelph's history is based in agriculture - what with G-town being the home to The Ontario Veterinary College and all - AND because OVC just happens to be the oldest veterinary college in Canada and the United States, it seemed fitting and fair to let the critters have their day in the blogospotlight.
OVC was originally located in Toronto in 1862, moved to Guelph in 1922 and became a founding college of the University of Guelph in 1964. To review Key Dates in the History of the Ontario Veterinary College, click on the link.

Blog Guelph: 3
Today Blog Guelph takes a gander at the magical, mystical, marvelous Number 3.
Everywhere you look, even in our photo pools, the number three seems to rear it's significant head.
trio...triad...triplet... triptych...trilogy...tricycle...triplicate...triumverate...
it goes on and on and on...
So behold (and click!) a smattering of images and reflections on the first odd prime number:
Pythagoras called three the perfect number, basically because it expressed all - beginning, middle, and end.
When something happens three times, there is a pattern.
Earth is the third planet in its local Solar System.
In the constellation Orion, his belt is made up of 3 stars in a row.
Third time's the charm.
A hat-trick in sports is associated with succeeding at anything three times in three consecutive attempts.
Now, on the count of three...

Blog Guelph: Sharon Smith
Photo taken in Guelph, Ontario Canada.
For the last nine years, my book keeper, Sharon Smith, regularly came to my home office to do my books. Always punctual, I would have her coffee ready to pour, paper work organized and my prehistoric iMac cranked on in anticipation.
Like a tradition, we would start the monthly visit pretty much the same way every time. Sharon would settle in the office chair and gently pat the computers dusty head - I would offer up specific accounting needs that I had identified and we'd both comment on the state of the universe. Then I would leave her to the task of coaxing data into the belly of the beast of 'artificial intelligence'.
When Sharon didn't appear last Thursday morning, I immediately started to worry. It was 9:15 and in the entire time we'd worked together I had never known her to be late.
I called her home and left a message.
When her sister called back a short time later to tell me the sad news of Sharon's sudden death earlier in the week, I was stunned to say the least. Now I'm deeply saddened.
Today's series of several images is dedicated to my friend and wonderful book keeper Sharon Smith. She saw me through some magnificent highs and excruciating lows over our years together - always steady as eddy. Indeed, she helped managed many of Guelph's artists and community group finances and guided even more befuddled people through 'tax madness' each year. Sharon loved dancing, singing and being outdoors by the shore of any body of water.
She is and will continue to be greatly missed. Gilchrist Funeral Home Visitation and Memorial service details are here.
