Blog Guelph: Daily Dose of Guelph

~ For more images by The Giant Vermin, please click the pic and visit their Flickr account or click on their Blog Guelph Label.

In a former life, I lived in a small, rural town of 1700 with a weekly newspaper that really had to scrape for news. Great gossipy columns would be dedicated to the out of town guests at Merle and Edna's Sunday dinner, who's dog had puppies or just what body part was acting up on the most newly admitted person to the local hospital.

Today's series of 6 posts is kind of like that.

We'll start with the horn tooting headlines.

BLOG GUELPH RANKS NUMBER ONE IN THE

Aussiejourno’s Weekly Blog Awards

Blog Guelph has been in the top ten of these awards for about a month - which was cool enough for me. Now - well - geez, we've gotten the big nod!

I'd like to thank David McMahon for starting the awards in the first place and Joel for working so hard as this weeks judge. And of course where would Blog Guelph be without the zillions of terrific photographer's!

Photo-less - that's where.

~ For more images by EyeFocus, please click the pic and visit their Flickr account or click on their Blog Guelph Label.

Thanks to the controversy that's brewing over our drinking water, Guelph tap water is seeing a resurgence of popularity.

Comment One: I refused my first plastic bottle of water on Saturday night. Instead I got a glass and drank from the tap.

Comment Two: It was so liberating. Not a plastic bottle anywhere. We just drank water straight from the tap - and it tasted so good.

Blog Guelph: Guelph Contemporary Dance Festival

Photo Credit: Randy Sutherland ~ For more images by this photographer, please click this link and visit his photo blog.

This Sunday is International Dance Day - a timely and wonderful reminder that dance is an ancient form of expression rooted in community celebration and that Guelph has an entire festival dedicated to this wonderful fusion of mind and body.

With only a month to go, now would be an excellent time to get your tickets for the upcoming Guelph Contemporary Dance Festival - slated for May 31 - June 3. There's an incredible selection of both ticketed and complimentary events to enjoy in various venues around the city including Exhibition Park and St. George's Square downtown.

And I'm told that this year’s festival is dedicated to children, an idea whose day has finally come, according to the Guelph Contemporary Dance Festival. “Our festival is very child-friendly: : Fully half of our performances take place in parks and in public squares, places where children don’t have to contain their exuberance and their genuine fascination with the beauty and rhythm of dance,” comments artistic director, Catrina von Radecki.

Check out the festival website for the line up, then get out your calendar. Trust me - if you want to be uplifted, you really want to catch as much of the festival as your time will permit.

Blog Guelph: The Pagani Style

Photo Credit: Cool Baby ~ For more images by this photographer, please click the pic and visit their Flickr account.

Today I'm pleased to offer a series of 6 posts that feature the work of two Guelph architects ~ Dario Pagani (1903-1986) and his son Richard Pagani (b 1930). This series was inspired by photographer Cool Baby.

Dario Pagani was born in Milan Italy and moved to Guelph in the 1930's. His first home located at 49 Metcalfe Street was built in 1936 by Dario for his family and has been deemed the first "modern" house in Guelph.

I was fortunate enough to host one of my Breast of Canada calendar launches in this home during the time it was owned by Guelph artist Doug Haines and web designer Sandy Walsh.

Thirteen Evergreen was built in 1961 by Richard, with his father's help, to be used as his own home. A few year's ago, it was featured in the annual Doors Open Guelph (coming up this weekend) and has been designated a heritage building by the City of Guelph.

The flat roofed, contemporary style of house is not a common sight in Guelph or Ontario for that matter. I suspect winter is the main reason.

Number 6 Tobey, which I have never laid eyes on, was designed in 1960 by Ricard Pagani and features redwood walls and a flat, eave less roof.

You may recognize this as the Blount Building.

I found this on the company website: "In 1965 a new building of 85,000 square feet was constructed on a 17-acre site on the present Edinburgh Road site. The new building won a national architecture award."

Funny that they wouldn't mention the architects name; Richard Pagani.

Other Pagani inspired structures have already gone the way of the wreaking ball - including Memorial Gardens - which is currently being transformed into the new City of Guelph Administration building.

Blog Guelph: Toad Crossing Guard

Photo Credit: KJane ~ For more images by this photographer, please click the pic and visit their Flickr account.

This news is unlikely to make the front page of our daily paper - and yet - every year at about this time, a gazzillion Guelph toads go on a dangerous pilgrimage across Arthur Street to their summer home on the Speed River for some hot toady action. Without being too graphic, many of our amphibian residence find the street crossing a crushing experience - hence the voluntary Toad Crossing Guards.

Dozens of Guelph citizens heed the call of our horny friends and head out into the night with buckets and flashy safety vests to both warn motorists and catch and carry toads to safety - thereby ensuring more croaking and less croaking if you know what I mean.

Just one more reason why living in Guelph leaves a good taste in your mouth.
