Blog Guelph: Are you up to the challenge? The Sharp Goat Photo Challenge, that is.

8 x 10 Large format lego camera by cool-baby

I've set a couple of goals* related to photography this year.
  1. Continue with iPhoneography. There are so many cool and creative apps that hold my interest. If the iPhone 6 is released and the camera specs look amazing I might upgrade my 4S, and

  2. Improve my DSLR skills. By that I mean no longer relying on auto or presets. Sometimes I get lucky, but most of the time I'm not happy with the results.
Given my goals, I was excited to learn about:

The Sharp Goat Photography Challenge

It's the brainchild of Nick Montgomery, a local photographer / cinematographer / editor / vfx artist. The challenge started last week, but anyone is welcome to participate at anytime. A new challenge will be issued each week.

All you need to participate is a camera (phone, DSLR or P&S), a free flickr account, and a desire to learn with a group and improve your photography skills.

Watch the video below to learn more about it, then visit the Sharp Goat Photography blog for this week's challenge. Submit your photos here.

Each week Nick will post a video critique on the Sharp Goat Facebook page and the photos that were submitted so participants can provide feedback on each other's photos.

I'm in, how 'bout you? And thanks, Nick for initiating this!

- Kim

*Last year i set a goal of having a photography exhibit and I didn't. I can't say I feel real bad about it because I enjoyed just taking and sharing photos on Flickr and Instagram. And I was involved with organizing the Guelphonography photo contest  and exhibit and that was pretty cool too.

Blog Guelph: Acoustic Muse

Can you imagine a soundtrack for this lovely photograph? Allow me to suggest the music of Ken Morris! Today on CFRU, for the Pure Guelphishness playlist, we broadcast several tunes from his album Acoustic Muse.

If you missed the broadcast, you can find some listening pleasure at Ken's myspace page, or listen back to the hoofbeats podcast, or find it in the cfru.ca archive.  It was really great to hear such quality musicianship, such diverse yet cohesive songs, delivered by another "local."  I was delighted to find it in the cfru library, but it wouldn't surprise me to know you found your copy on e-bay.

Blog Guelph: A bird's eye view of Guelph

Wings Over Guelph: One Stone Road by peterkelly

I love seeing photos of Guelph taken from a vantage point I don't have access to.

In his Wings Over Guelph series, Peter Kelly gives us a bird's eye view of a variety of locations including Stone Road, Homewood Health Centre grounds, River Run Centre and the Church of our Lady.

Blog Guelph: Walking in a painted wonderland

Painted Camera is a soon-to-be-released iPhone app from The 11ers, makers of Glaze. Unlike Glaze, it's a shooting app as opposed to an editing app.

I'm partial to painterly effects and from the moment I saw users testing it on Facebook I've been anxiously awaiting its release. Last night, to my delight, I received a promo code from the developer to download it before its release on The App Store.

There are a variety of lenses to choose from and I have to say it rocks. It's good enough to be used on its own but could also be used in combination with other apps as part of your design workflow.

The photos I'm sharing with you today were taken on my walk home from work today. I look forward to shooting more tomorrow... perhaps some downtown streetscapes...

There's more to this thread. See two more photos shot with Painted Camera: In the woods and Sun in the trees.

Free snow to a good home

free snow to a good home-9854 by fishwithme55

We've certainly had our share of snow this year and according to the Weather Network there's more on the way as a "Texas low pushes into southern Ontario."

I can't really say I mind it, although it's getting a little harder to shovel my walkway now that the snow's piled so high on each side.

But oh well, it's made for some great photo opportunities and spring's on its way... we hope. In the meantime here are some links to useful information provided by the City of Guelph.
