Blog Guelph: Unpredictable Weather

jan 29 by Flailchest

Good Morning!

Getting ready to go outside and start the day was a bit of a challenge this morning. What to wear? Snowboots, rubber boots, water skis or nearly warm enough to forfeit footwear altogether.

What a difference a week makes in this new climate of ours.

Brolly and toque at the ready, be prepared!

Blog Guelph: In a fog

a walk in the park (ing lot) by D J England

I got up early this morning and walked to work intending to capture some foggy photos along the way. While I enjoyed the walk - in spite of the icy trail - my photos were disappointing. The fog just wasn't thick enough to create the atmosphere I'd hoped for.

At noon, I ventured out again but the fog remained out of reach... enticing me to walk farther, then retreating as I drew near.

Fog's like that sometimes. Moody and elusive.

I did see a couple of cool things though:
  1. a blue ball on the river that had been checked out by a duck, and
  2. a hooded merganser
And I managed to get a decent fog photo on my way home.

Blog Guelph: Some Songs on our Streets

In the snowy quiet of this Monday, I wanted to bring you some sincere, powerful songs by our very own Bry Webb. He recently filmed a Southern Souls session at his home (and neighbour's), in our fine town, featuring an unreleased cover of Burl Ives' "Sad Man's Songs" and "Viva" from his album, Provider.   His February tour dates (featuring The Providers: Mike Brooks, Rich Burnett and Tyler Belluz) range from St Catharines, Toronto, Peterborough, and Kingston.  But you can catch a glimpse of his powerful songwriting, right here in Guelph, below:

Blog Guelph: Orangeness Day (almost)

Orange Parka, originally uploaded by kellyhughes1970.

Hello Friday lovers,

I'm jumping the gun here, but given that we don't often post on the weekend, I thought it would be ok to announce Orangeness Day one day early.

You see, it's really supposed to be January 26 - tomorrow. As for it's origins, I believe O.D. is the brainchild (but of course) of the indomitable Sue Richards.
Our keeper of this blog.
Empress of Awesome.
In 2004 she circled January 26 on her Breast of Canada calendar and declared this day to be full of colour. A splash of life in the midst of the monochromatic January.
So there you have it.
Orangeness Day - a day early.

Perhaps Sue might properly tout all it's glory tomorrow, we shall see. But I do know that there is enough Orangeness out there to brighten many a day.
Spot some if you can.

-Downtown Lynn
**addendum** I would be seriously, deeply, madly remiss if I neglected to mention Burns Day too. Me Mum would be distressed if I left off mentioning dear old Rabbie. Yes, Rabbie.

The best laid schemes o' Mice an' Men,
Gang aft agley,
An' lea'e us nought but grief an' pain,
For promis'd joy!

Blog Guelph: Frozen

water, ice, light by digitalambitions/ Valerie Hogg

"There was music in the caf├ęs at night
And revolution in the air
Then he started into dealing with slaves
And something inside of him died
She had to sell everything she owned
And froze up inside
And when finally the bottom fell out
I became withdrawn
The only thing I knew how to do
Was to keep on keepin’ on like a bird that flew
Tangled up in blue"

Blog Guelph: Enough Love to Warm the Coldest Winter Heart

Good Chilly Morning!

Finally, WINTER has arrived. These brisk, freeze your teeth temperatures are what I remember from my childhood. I secretly wish I still owned my sunset orange snow pants from the 70's. Embrace the cold or the closest warm body (with their permission of course!).

Remember Ben Wick's advice? "Be nice, clear your ice". Take a moment to check on your neighbors to make sure there hasn't been a nasty fall out front of their home. This has happened to a few dear people I know.

When we all look out for one another, that warmth will soothe the coldest temperatures.

Blog Guelph: guelPhonography Lives!

Snow snout and a wayward tongue by Gavatron

Heads up: 2013 Guelphonography Photo Contest and Exhibit in the works!

Last year's event was such a success we decided to do it again. We're in the VERY early stages of planning so I don't have any details to share other than we'll likely start accepting entries late July or early August. That gives guelphonographers plenty of time to take and process photos or peruse their archives.

If you haven't heard the term Guelphonography, it refers to photos of Guelph taken and processed on phones... like the ones I've shared with you today, or the 2012 contest entries posted on

Guelphonography lives!

Stay tuned for details about this year's contest.

"Come walk down this garden path with me, under the trees that arch and bow and sway..." -- Shannon Kingsbury

I'm delighted to become a Monday contributor to Blog Guelph. As a first timer, I wanted today to simply share a photograph that reminds me of one of the songs of one of our fine town's fine musical talents. I hope you are as moved by it as I am.

On Monday, August 5th at 9:00am, Pure Guelphishness on featured this artist.  I was proud to share the tune I first heard on Shannon's then-new electric harp, which is featured in the video I used for broadcast.  We also shared reviews and bio facts from her cbc page.  What was your favourite song? Did you sing along??

Blog Guelph: I'll take that as a good omen

Broad-Winged Hawk, originally uploaded by G. Norsworthy.

Being raised as a bit of a heathen has allowed for a lifetime of borrowing bits and pieces of others beliefs. I will celebrate Hannukah and Diwali just as joyfully as I bow to Solstice.

But it's the animals that seem to really move me when they make repeated appearances in my life. Why did that deer show up precisely at that moment of weakness? What does that porcupine want to tell me?

My partner thinks it's all crap, of course, but I invite this notion of totems. Of signs and symbols, even of ciphers. I want to find the meaning there.

This post-party ramble does have a point. I keep seeing a hawk down by my river, and just yesterday, it came right into my backyard. Because I was having the BEST DAY EVER, I've obviously chosen to see it as lucky. As a nod to the new year looking just fine, and proof that I'm on the right path.

True, this may indeed be crap. But it's my belief in a stew of this and a smattering of that, so I'll choose to take it as a good omen, thank you very much.

Blog Guelph: Look Up

Taking photographs has taught me a few things but I think the greatest thing it's taught me, is that we are connected. Watching the sky at sunrise or sunset, the storms coming or going, the rain driving, the snow blinding, the wind and the fog, or the deep blue sky - we're part of the cycles of night and day, winter and summer. It's comforting to look up.

We're under the same sky.

Good Morning!

Not being a morning person myself, I really admire those people who get up before everyone else to do this sort of thing. What thing? To wander around on a damp morning with your camera in hand searching for those images that provide our daily blog images. I don't know how many pots of coffee Nick needs to get him out of the house, but I know I would need at least  one stein sized mug of joe before I was out the door. Thank you Nick for your patience and tenacity.

Have a grand day!

move, originally uploaded by Flailchest.

Dear fine photo followers,

It's just a January thaw, right?
A sad, short life for all of our brilliant snowpeople of late, though.
And yes, not a good sign of the climactic times.

But let's pull ourselves up by our Welly straps, shall we, and remember that there are many important happenings in the world today. Crises and stands that may just overshadow our confused season.

A small token: here's a shot of colour and chill to get you moving on this drab day.

Blog Guelph: That's Enough

fade by Flailchest
fade, a photo by Flailchest on Flickr.

Yes, it’s a new year.

Time to think about things differently. Time to know those who care, time to see those who don’t. Time to move forward, time to leave the trail behind.  Time to separate love from shadows.

And it’s time to say that’s enough.
That I've tried and tried
and now that’s enough.
I've offered myself honestly
and now that’s enough.
I've been out there with my heart
and that’s enough.
I've been out in the wind a long time
and that’s enough.
I've been waiting for the tide to change
and now that’s enough.
I will change it.

I've had enough
Of those who will not try
Of those who do not offer themselves honestly
Of those who are out there for themselves
Of those that will not stand in the wind with me
Of those who will not turn the tide

That’s enough.
It’s time to seek, time to journey.
Time to wave goodbye, time to go.
Time to hold the mirror against the sky.
Time to cry.
Time to let it be damned, time to push back.
Time to shout go on, time to leave.
Time to close the door, time to pack your dreams.
Time to hope, time to grieve.

Time to just say that’s enough.

Royal City Snow Storm by P.Freeman
Royal City Snow Storm, a photo by P.Freeman on Flickr.

I thought I would post this rather serene winterish image for you today. The weather seems to think it should make a return to spring this week. A forecast of rain will put a sad damper on all of the outdoor rinks carefully constructed. I never thought I would say "Give me a proper cold winter", but I did and I mean it!

Snow, snow, snow..........

Blog Guelph: Lonely benches

Lone Bench in the Snow, The Arboretum, University of Guelph by Terry McDonald -

I've seen quite a few lonely benches lately... in parks, along trails, and at the Arboretum. And a lonely pair of jeans frozen in ice at the edge of the Speed that sparked a lively conversation on Facebook and a  4-sentence story.

But back to the benches...  which I find myself far more drawn to in winter than summer. They look downright stunning when covered with - or buried in - snow... don't you think?

Places to chill... whatever the season.
