Blog Guelph: Unsung Hero

A mess of Bluebirds by Alan Norsworthy
A mess of Bluebirds, a photo by Alan Norsworthy on Flickr.

Good Morning!

My photographer friend, Alan Norsworthy told me this amazing story about a man who has taken birding to a whole new level. I share this with you now in Alan's words and his photograph.

Thank you Joe, you are an inspiration!

"A mess of Bluebirds

Meet Joe, or at least Joe's hands.

I bumped into Joe during my walk in the Ignatius Centre. He devotes his time to protecting the small and vulnerable.
In this case baby bluebirds, the villain of the piece are "bloodsuckers" as he calls them.

Carefully he wrapped the young in the cloth and placed them in the shade, then he got to work. He showed me the nest that was infested with maggot like larvae that feed on the young birds flicking them out onto the ground away from the nest site. There must have been 2 dozen of them. When he was sure he had them all he replaced the nest in the box and very carefully checked each of the young to make sue they were free of these pests and returned them to the nest.

He does this over and over again all over the Ignatius Centre and around Guelph Lake.

Mommy Bluebird wasn't too pleased but how was she to know that Joe was helping ensure the survival of her family?

Meet Joe, one of the unsung hero's ...."

Maybe we can all find some time to do something inspirational today.
