Blog Guelph: Life Is A Train of Moods Like A String of Beads

Life is a train of moods like a string of beads; and as we pass through them they prove to be many colored lenses, which paint the world their own … and each shows us only what lies in its own focus.

~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

I love the symbol of a train.

It’s something that moves fast, glides on thin rails, forges through all manner of landscape, and takes people to their destination.

Trains mark the distances between people and the miles of open track that lay endlessly witnessed by those that travel the train, are like steel and staunch pathways between friends, family, love, and work.

We take so many things for granted in our lives. The people we have near us, the communities in which we laugh, the distances we cross every day to reach out to one another.

As Emerson suggests - like the cars of a train, life is full of many changeable moods and many landscapes with many lenses. But like a string of beads held by the metal of our hearts, those train cars make up the journey of our lives as we travel through the rocky and alternately smooth, barren but more often beautiful, landscapes of time.
