Friday night is rocking in and September is rolling out. The temperature is dropping, rain is certain and The Center of the Universe - aka The Albion - awaits your arrival with open taps and a warm glow.

Here's some Albion trivia for you: The Alb holds the second-oldest liquor license in Ontario and was the first hotel in Guelph to create an outdoor patio.

Imagine the hangover history of this 155 year old limestone gem. I certainly clocked a few hundred hours of my youth sucking back my share of brews, seeing fabulous bands and dancing the night away.

Not that I'm promoting excessive drinking - just saying - fun can be had at the Albion.

Blog Guelph: Isolated

Hello all

Fall is upon us and I speak from recent and current experience when I say that the cold is going around and people are getting sick with the coughs, running noses and sniffles.

People say to drink lots of liquid, take vitamins and stay in bed/take it easy. I know sometimes when I'm in bed sick, I feel isolated and that's the theme of my blog, isolated colours.

I hope you enjoy MY photos that I've taken over the years from the area and isolated the colours. All the work is done right on my camera, no computer software involved

Good Day, Fellow Photo Enthusiasts,

I thought I would share some great images taken by the members of the Flickr group; the Guelph Photography Club. This group is open to all and to all levels of photographers. They meet once a month at The Albion, in lovely downtown Guelph.

I thought this was an interesting study on those around us, especially if you spend time in the downtown. You may, like me, have walked past this man for years and never knew his name. Now, thanks to Julia's fantastic portraiture, we know he is Randy. The images add a connection to someone perhaps unknown to us in the community. We are given permission to linger a little longer with Randy from the distance of your computer screen. To me, this image reminds me to have compassion and that we are all just humble humans doing the best we can in a chaotic society.

Hopefully, this series The People in Our Neighborhood will entice you to pop out to the next meeting at The Albion. Bring your camera, a sense of adventure and explore with a great group of people who are just as curious about the city we live in as you are.

Plus, fog can create some of the most beautiful and mysterious images.

Thought I would start today with a lovely little flashback to summer. This video features Dan Mangan performing two songs from his newest album (it comes out on Tuesday). The neat thing about this video is that it was filmed in the Speed River in Guelph this July as Dan and band headed to Hillside. The rest of the photos are a little more appropriate for the current season.

Blog Guelph: THE BEAR COMES HOME by Aidan M.D. Ware

Almost everyone has at one time driven or walked or cycled past this large bronze sculpture known fondly as 'The Bear.' Icon, mascot, chameleon, and silent friend, The Bear has inspired a wellspring of creative interaction between groups and people. From birthdays to marriages to holidays, this sculpture has marked the passage of life's ceremonies with humour, intensity, and grace.

It was oddly humbling to see The Bear offloaded off of a cube van today - I saw it lying vulnerable with a bracing of cloth around its neck, the ties of the tractor strapping it and pulling it back to its vertical height. It was awing to watch as the tractor hoisted it to its new base, a pedestal of concrete and metal. The drills made way for the long pins and The Bear was gently placed back onto its perch as passers-by clamoured and smiled in the rain. Car honks resounded from Gordon Street; a cheerful and happy welcome home for our Bear.

It made me think about time. About community. About how we need to care for one another. The Bear's hand is outstretched... and so I for a moment reached out and held it, wondering what the coming years would bring; what celebrations it would banner, what causes it would forward, what imagination it would drive.

I hope many who have loved and shared with The Bear will come out to its re-unveiling on Saturday, October 1 at 7pm. I would love to talk to you and hear your stories and to share mine.
