They are great any season of the year; still in the winter as the snow falls, full of potential in the spring, packed with life and activity in the summer, and a showcase of colour in the fall. Blog Guelph: cutrins
It's Black and White Wednesday on Blog Guelph!
Here are some beautiful black and white images produced by some amazing photographers. There is a unique presence to a subject presented in BW, one that is profoundly different when the same subject matter is presented in colour. The black of the black, the white of the white, and the range of greys in the mix really shape the feel of the image. Guelph has such a sensitive, reflective, vibrant, and sometimes gritty, vibe, one that lends itself so well to presentation in BW. Putting this post together has really inspired me to get out and photograph!

Blog Guelph: Painted cannon

The University of Guelph cannon is a central player in an action of art happening on campus this week. Long a fixture on campus, the cannon has been the infrastructure for many pranks and protests, routinely painted two and three times in an evening. What a meditative process it must be to shift through physical remains of all that late night energy. In stray lemming's photo, I can almost hear the laughter and the excitement in those drops of paint now dried. I am looking forward to hearing about the outcome of this action.

Blog Guelph: flight
They say birds of a feather flock together. Well today's pod of perfect pics gave me that feel, despite being quite different focuses.
This weekend is Culture Days in Guelph - officially. Frankly I think Guelph serves up a boiling stew of extraordinary arts everyday. Still, here's this weekends creatively rich menu for you to dine on.
Likely you've noticed the municipal election signs decorating our city. Election day is Monday, October 25th. All the details and more can be had at VoteGuelph.ca. If you're interested in issues like drinking water and how we manage our garbage - both will be debated over the course of the campaigning period.
Let's think about what kind of city we want to hand over to the next generation, before we vote shall we?!
So like - Happy Post Full Moon Weekend.

Blog Guelph: Guelph Arboretum
University of Guelph Arboretum
The Arboretum on campus is an amazing place to wander through, and a remarkable environment for photography. I have shot there for the past four years and am continually inspired by the niches revealed to me during different seasons, different lighting, and different paths. I have so many memories of photographing in the Arboretum, like the time at dusk near the golf course when I watch two dogs chase a deer only for the dogs to collapse at my feet while darkness settled in. Or the first time I stumbled upon the pond, or that boardwalk, or the rows of trees planted beyond the paths, or the field of exploding milkweed pods silhouetted by the setting sun... If you like being around growth, then I can't recommend enough a trip through the Arboretum. Perhaps I should do a weekly Arboretum series!
Hope you are all enjoying the brief resurgence of summer, I am getting antsy for full-on Fall!

Blog Guelph: Dried leaves
Fall Colours!
Fall in Guelph is amazing. Growing up, Fall was a three day regrouping between shorts and snow, but here it is a season to be experienced and embraced! We are really blessed by the slow settling in to Winter, as the leaves come off, the layers go on. This side of Fall, the firey reds, the warm oranges, and those assertive yellows on the trees that line our roads and our parks, make for such a beautiful time of year.
Hope you are all able to get some colour into your day,

Blog Guelph: Fresh from the market
Fall Vegetables!
What a great time of year to love vegetables. I have eaten a record number of tomatoes this year, mashed up with garlic and basil-infused olive oil. I've never really gotten my mouth and my mind into the acorn squash but bring on those spaghetti and butternut varieties. Hope everyone has a wonderful sunny day.

Blog Guelph: sunlight through the leaves
The first thing I noticed when I opened my blinds this morning was a scene similar to this lovely image.
My sun soaked tree happens to be a Tulip Tree, grown from seed by my dear friend Henry Kock - who is being honoured next week at the University of Guelph. The "Henry Kock Propagation Centre" will be officially dedicated on Monday September 27th. The new greenhouse is located in the area presently used for the sale of herbaceous plants at the Arboretum Auxiliary Plant Sale (east of the Hilton Service Centre).
Breeze through today's collection of tree pics and give thanks for the splendor.
