Blog Guelph: Chipmunk

Chipmunk, originally uploaded by felixtrio.

I have been taking a ton of photos lately with the iphone. I'm going to try not to today. You see, I have also been using this other app while I am running called runkeeper, and it uses gps to track your route, pace and so on. Yesterday there were a few stops down by the river and one of them I forgot to turn the thing back on after the pause. I'm curious how far I can go, and it's a great way to push yourself a little further next time. Now if only I could keep the iphone in my pocket and ignore all the beautiful things I pass today. I don't think I could resist this wee chipmunk's face above. Great shot felixtrio!

Have a fantastic day everyone! OH, and here's a link to a beautiful shot of Karen's that she took in Belize. I just love those faded colours!

Blog Guelph: Dairy Bush

Made in Guelph - Kirk White

Dairy Bush Originally uploaded by kirk white

Kirk has a passion for colour, for nature, and for water, and lucky for us, photography is a great way to communicate these loves. One thing that is immediately felt upon seeing his work is the strength and presence of colour. He uses colour to define shape, to fill space, and to concentrate emotion, which is further enhanced by his use of sharpness within his images. His photographs are filled with subjects that seem to vibrate with colour adding to a captivating tension between the elements. There is both a richness and a contextual relevance to his colours that feels like he has removed a haze we all carry through our day to day. Kirk has an amazing collection of water-related images, many of which involve the presentation of motion against an immobile backdrop. You can tell from the feel of his work that he has a great respect and understanding for water and the way it moves through the world. His flowing water images are underpinned by a solid narrative provided through the inclusion of surrounding structures. While many photographers are able to communicate a sense of season or space, Kirk does a fantastic job presenting the feel and light unique to different parts of the day. His work is incredibly unified, with solid and settled images that grab your eye and your heart, and I would highly recommend a trip through his stream. The colours, like the water, are a real rush.

I am hoping for a few more Peacoat days, but likely not this weekend!  At least it will be a little warmer on the bike.

Blog Guelph: Be Brave

, originally uploaded by Denim.

I thought a trilogy of Gems was in order today - each with fodder for contemplation and all by our blogging buddy and foto friend Donna/Denim. Should you want to explore the talent of this woman further - click the image and have a boo at her beautiful Flickr stream - a remarkable 5,236 items in total.

No plans this weekend? Why not make some good karma by contributing a few 'random acts of kindness' to your world. Smile. lend a hand, offer a compliment, be kind and share your 'wild and precious life' with someone. Get buzzed by the good vibration.

Perhaps you've noticed that I've been messing around with Blog Guelph's skin lately - a bit of a spring cleaning which I hope you like. Plus I've added more Guelphcentric arty links - Etsy Shops and local musicians thus far. I believe the more creative connections we can boast, the merrier we'll all be. Think of us as a virtual community arts collective fashioned in the spirit of Art Jam.

Now then - be brave and answer the question.

Blog Guelph: Downtown Guelph

, originally uploaded by Denim.

This first photo is one of mine, and even though it was taken three years ago, it was the scene yesterday to a tee. Clone out those tulips and yea, just the scene. There's Lurch out in front of Dino's where my main destination ended up being. New Vans were my mission. I had a friend that bought every single pair of his converse from this store, and I've usually had a pair in my arsenal, but Vans, now there's where comfort lies. Sure Converse has a green I go nuts over, and Vans are apparently not all the rage anymore, but I will go down as an unfashionable Van lover.

Have a great day everyone, and check out the downtown photos on today's post!

Blog Guelph: Guelph Lake Revisited

Guelph Lake Revisited, originally uploaded by P.Freeman.

I've been reading as much as I can lately. It's either been curling, reading or getting lost in the apps of my new iPhone. (yes the p is capitalized. I'm constantly being corrected while writing on it.) This cold was a doozy, and I am happy to be on the other side of it now.
I took advantage of the free books available as ebooks, but last night I decided I didn't need a classic. I needed something different to celebrate my somewhat healthy condition. I bought This Book Will Save Your Life, by A.M Homes. I think it's going to be a book that sticks with me. All last night I dreamt that I had something in my chest that I needed taken out.
Now, I am off to figure out if you can lend ebooks. I think Paula might like this one.

Have a great day everyone! The sun is shining, and I think I picked quite an assortment of photos for you to click on.

Blog Guelph: Spring Running Off

Made in Guelph - Milton Y

Spring Running Off Originally uploaded by Milton Y

Today's featured work comes from local photographer Milton Y. Having looked through his entire stream there were so many images and so many observations that really stood out. Milton is a seasonal photographer, in that the essence of the season - the smell, the feel of the air, the anticipation of being outside, the delicate nature unique to each - is immediate and palpable in his images. He makes exceptional use of colour and tone, which seems to impart a crispness to his works that mirrors the bite of the winter air, the softness of fall morning frost, and the relief from winter that inheres the Spring runoff. One of Milton's strongest skills as a photographer is his ability to communicate a felt sense of a space. I noticed as I looked through his images that I was transported to the places I had already been, running down a country road in Fergus in the summer, standing in a sheep barn, watching a ski race, but moreso that I had a profound sense of the affect of experiencing those unfamiliar subjects. Milton has an amazing collection of images from abandoned spaces that carry with them the air of being occupied, and a collection of family pictures that make me wish I knew the people. His images are underpinned by warmth, respect, and honest awareness, and if you haven't already checked out his stream, I would highly recommend you do so.

I am holding on to wearing the wool coat as a long as I can, but I hope you have all enjoyed these warmer days,

Paula Russell
