Blog Guelph: Your Family's Health

Today's series of five posts focus on a variety of topics and images that struck me as interesting and in this case important.

Here's the skinny on number one. Currently 'we the people' of this great nation of ours have something called health freedom. As example - we can choose to buy and take vitamins without the approval of our medical doctor.

I don't know about you but I've successfully practised vitamin taking for a very long time with no ill effects.

So.....in a slightly louder typeface..... HERE'S THE BUTT OF THE LATEST WAY YOU AND I MAY BE CONTROLLED IN THE VERY NEAR FUTURE.

On April 30, 2007 the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) will close the public comment period on "Guidance" which will classify every alternative practice as medicine so that only licensed physicians can carry out the procedure AND vitamins, minerals, herbs, etc., will suddenly become "untested drugs" which will be forbidden.

Imagine - busted for vitamins!

1) The FDA is an American agency, not Canadian. Food and drug safety in Canada is regulated by Health Canada. Our MP's ans MPP's have no jurisdiction in American health matters.

2) My understanding of the issue is that the FDA wishes to license and regulate the burgeoning "holistic" and "homeopathic" industries in the US, which produce ans sell untested and potentially dangerous medicines to the public. It's not a matter of forbidding their sale, but making sure that the product is safe, contains what it says it contains, and don't cause adverse reactions with other medicines.

Hey Querty,

Thanks for your comment.

1) I know FDA is US. And what happens in the US will influence Canada. (And Blog Guelph has a US audience too)

2) My understanding is that by changing the wording from 'supplements' to 'drugs', the products will have to go through and pass clinical trials to be allowed on the market. Clinical trials are very expensive and typically funded by Big Pharma. Big Pharma funds clinical trials for products that they can patent. Plant based remedies cannot be patent. So with no payout possible, clinical trials will be unlikely and supplements that have hundreds of years of documented anecdotal evidence of effectiveness will become illegal.

If you have 40 minutes, check out the Codex video on this site. It clearly spells out the global nature of this issue.
